There are three major requirements for developing GLOs:
- The elicitation of reusable designs for learning
- Representing these patterns in a form that can be embedded in an authoring tool
- Incorporating the pattern in the tool in a way that is accessible and attractive to users.
These requirements may be covered by using one of two main methods for developing new GLOs:
- Extract patterns from previously created learning objects
- Develop new GLO patterns using an approach such as the CETL Agile Development Method.
The end result is a pedagogical pattern built into an authoring tool (GLO-Maker). This pattern can be used to generate specific learning objects based on the tool. Crucially, it can also be used to modify a learning object created in this way.
